Chapter 33: Beneath the Banter
One week later.
Things within the warehouse became a lot livelier. Every day for seven days, Silas chose to learn from at least one Visored. Whether it was their skills or their weaknesses, none of it slipped his analysis. The only person he didn`t approach was Lisa.
It had become obvious that he liked her. Hiyori was perhaps the only one bothered as to why he wasn`t at least trying to talk to her. But why would Silas do something as careless as that? Rushing a romantic relationship wouldn`t yield the best results.
Nonetheless, that didn`t stop him from giving her occasional compliments when they passed by each other. Lisa wasn`t the type that wouldn`t show interest in someone unless that person was direct, which Silas took advantage of. The more and more he played with her feelings, the more she started to draw toward him.
And why wouldn`t he know how she worked? After spending quite some time with the group, he understood how each of them functioned.
Love often found himself getting lost or too entranced by shMnen magazines. There were times that he suggested Silas and him play a trivia game to prove that he had most knowledge out of everyone. Of course, Silas hadn`t backed down when he discovered that these so-called "shMnen magazines" were Japanese manga from earth.
Everything, from Naruto to Dragon Ball, was present. And to no surprise, Bleach wasn`t a published.
Rose became the judge, with the game starting off with a question about Yu-Gi-Oh. After just three rounds, Love found it disheartening that Silas knew more about shMnen than he did. He even went as far as accusing him of cheating.
"How am I cheating?"
"Because you`re from the future."
"But the questions you asked were based on this year."
Next was Hachigen. Little had Silas known, the oversized Visored had an obsession with cats. On the day he spent time with him, the two were out in the town looking for stray cats to send to a shelter. Silas truly hated cats, which made him find spending time with Hachigen unbearable.
Regardless, he forced himself to get close to the Visored, pretending to enjoy himself and often encouraging Hachigen that he could be a veterinarian.
"You really think I`m good enough to be one?!"
"Of course. It`s not like you don`t have the power to heal animals` injuries."
Glitter sparkled in Hachigen`s eyes when he heard that comment. Silas, who might have been sincere, still detested him inwardly.Unauthorized duplication: this narrative has been taken without consent. Report sightings.
After him was Hiyori. Spending time with her was no different than interacting with a little sister. Granted, he made sure not to say ill-mannered things that would irritate her. She was a hot-tempered character, becoming triggered by the most harmless of jokes.
Knowing that she liked karaoke, he invited her to a session. Shinji, who happened to overhear this, decided to join, believing that Silas wouldn`t find her voice charming.
Once the three got to a bar late at night, Silas was appalled at what he was hearing. She sounded worse than two plastic plates rubbing against each other. Regardless, as not to make her upset, he complimented her singing. This wasn`t a lie since the theme song played was a song from Yumi Yoshimura and Ami Onuki, two Japanese artists known to sing Western music.
"You sing like a gorilla," Shinji commented.
"I`ll make you look like a gorilla, Baldy!"
"I think the song was nice," Silas added.
Never would he have imagined what occurred after he said that—Hiyori blushed.
Their time at the bar was short-lived when a few young adolescents came inside after hearing Hiyori`s singing. They were going to make fun of her until they noticed how beautiful she looked. Deciding it would be more convenient to flirt with her, their attempts failed after she lashed out at them in rage.
Hiyori was not the type to casually seduce. Hence why Silas found it amusing that she blushed. Granted, he could never like her personality or her looks. She was too self-centered.
After their night ended and they were banned from coming back, they would later return home for Silas to prepare for his next target: Mashiro.
Mashiro was exactly what he had expected. Because she acted like a child, had green hair like a child, and sounded like a child, she was (in a sense) a child.
Getting on her good side was easy. What Silas had done was take her out to restaurants that sold sweets.
All the money he had earned from helping Shinji perform soul burials was all spent on her cravings. Things had gotten so bad that she brought two bags full of candy just to shower Kensei with them.
"Get this crap off me!" Kensei yelled.
"But Ichigo bought it for the both of us, Ken-sei!"
"No he didn`t! He bought it for you! Now let me take a nap!"
The money was wasted, but at least he got something better in return: Mashiro`s good side.
When the day came to spend time with Rose, Silas was a little disturbed. Rose had this certain spot that he enjoyed venturing to when away at the warehouse. The location was in the forest. What was disturbing about it was that it harboured many lingering Souls.
"I like coming here to play my tunes," he explained.
A strange way to entertain himself, but at least it didn`t deal with cats.
Silas spent the entire day listening to him string his guitar and play soft music to the Souls around him. They were like the crowd at one of his concerts. Only, they weren`t as loud. Sometimes a citizen would come by before quickly leaving after thinking the forest was haunted.
On the last day, Silas still hadn`t tried to interact with Lisa. This was a good decision, considering she wasn`t good with romance. So instead, he spent time with Shinji.
Shinji, when he wasn`t swindling people out of their money, often liked practicing stand-up comedy. These were just some of the many things that was never expanded in the animation. But it was in one of Bleach`s video games, which Silas forgot about.
As horrible as his jokes were, Silas`s acting skills were better. He laughed at the right lines and pretended Shinji was funny. It was so believable that he almost cried.
This plan, however successful, backfired when Shinji decided to repeat those jokes randomly throughout the day—just to make him laugh for fun.
